Al-Awsiya Bird Sanctuary, also known as Historic Ossia Farm or Al-Usiyah Reserve, is a family-friendly nature reserve in Madinah, Saudi Arabia. It is recognized as the first dedicated bird sanctuary in the city, blending ecological preservation with a tranquil visitor experience near the landmark Quba Mosque.
Natural Setting and Design
Set within a palm-filled agrarian landscape in Al Khatim District, the sanctuary recreates a rural oasis under translucent canopies that filter sunlight. Artificial rainfall and landscaped paths contribute to a cooling micro-climate and an immersive natural atmosphere, ideal for relaxation and photography.
Wildlife and Experiences
Home to over 400 birds representing more than 20 species—from macaws and peacocks to smaller tropical varieties—the reserve encourages interactive encounters. Visitors can feed birds directly, observe them in flight, and experience their sounds amid the greenery. Occasional features such as gentle artificial rainstorms and rustic bridges enhance the sense of immersion.
Visitor Facilities
Al-Awsiya Bird Sanctuary includes shaded seating, family picnic zones, and a small outdoor café serving refreshments. Archery activities and thematic play areas extend the leisure offering. The site’s layout ensures accessibility for families, with free admission for very young children and seniors.
Cultural and Ecological Significance
Part of the historic Al-Awsiya Farm—named for the early Islamic companion Hilal bin Umayyah al-Awsi—the sanctuary symbolizes Madinah’s connection to both nature and heritage. It contributes to the city’s sustainable tourism by offering a peaceful, educational environment that supports biodiversity awareness while honoring local history.
